Thursday night was one for the ages, full of delicious food and drink, top-notch musical talent, and the stories that make these artists tick.
American Spirits Roadhouse in Asbury, New Jersey hosted Acoustic Storytellers Night, with Candlebox guitarist Brian Quinn as the headliner. The night also featured acoustic performances from local artists Zed D’Lance, Paul Knakk, and the father-daughter duo of Werner and Julia Sommer, who each came prepared with songs and stories to last the night.
First up was Werner Sommer, who played a few solo selections before inviting daughter Julia to share the stage with him prior to her solo set. It was immediately clear to anyone in attendance that musical talent — to write songs and perform them — runs in this family, as both Sommers combined their powers to give the evening a strong start.
Paul Knakk was up next, combining his alternative rock influence with big country rock hooks. Paul performed mostly originals, namely from his new album, “Rebel With a Cause” and including the particularly enjoyable single, “Boots.”
Zed D’Lance followed with a full band acoustic set, whose stripped-down nature helped their 90s alternative rock influences (like Live and Stone Temple Pilots) shine through. The band engaged the crowd in attendance as they rolled through released and unreleased material.
The stage was then set for Brian Quinn, a Pittston native who has found success as the guitarist of Candlebox. Quinn’s set was comprised mostly of covers, along with originals from previous bands Octane and Fosterchild. The set wasn’t complete, however, before Quinn would play some Candlebox material, closing with the band’s smash hit “Far Behind” accompanied by members of Zed D’Lance.
Also worth noting: American Spirits Roadhouse is a pretty cool spot with a lot of potential for live music. Reasonably priced food and drinks combine with a laid back atmosphere and good acoustics to make for an enjoyable listening experience. We look forward traveling to the other side of the Delaware for another show soon!
