After a week of breathtaking performances that have showcased the many forms and flavors of jazz and improvisational music, Sunday afternoon would bring about the conclusion of Allentown JazzFest 2017.
The scene was Zion “Liberty Bell” UCC Church on Hamilton St. There, the Moravian College Big Band — under the tutelage of music department chair Neil Wetzel — brought its bright sounds and talented students to the forefront of the afternoon, as they rolled through standards from John Coltrane and other legends.
They had company, however, in Coltrane-influenced NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman. Liebman, one of jazz’s most enduring soprano sax players, has also performed with the likes of Miles Davis and Elvin Jones during a career that spans nearly 60 years. He proved on Sunday afternoon that he has not lost a step, performing on a number of selections backed by the standout college musicians.
With that, we want to offer our congratulations to everyone involved in making this year’s Allentown JazzFest a success. Once again, our horizons were expanded by the spirit of jazz this week, and we look forward to what the future brings from this unique festival.
