Meet the ‘Fest Vets: Matt Molchany
Matt Molchany, co-founder of Tape Swap Radio and guitarist/vocalist of Bethlehem indie rock band, VoirVoir, is a long-time resident of Bethelhem. Matt has attended Musikfest for many years as a patron and performer, making him the perfect candidate to take a few minutes to tell us about his journey through the festival over the years.
How many years have you attended Musikfest?
Aside from when I lived on the West Coast, almost every year since it began!
What is your favorite thing about Musikfest, year after year?
The eclectic mix of musical styles and artists and that it’s spread out in my hometown, all a quick walk from where I live.
What are you looking forward to this year?
Seeing my friends play as much as I can and happening upon something unexpected—like when Ape and I stumbled upon “Southern Culture on the Skids” whom I hadn’t listened to for almost 25 years. We just went for a quick walk by Monocacy Creek, where we’d usually take our bikes or our dog, but found a psychobilly band tearing it up at Volksplatz.
Are you performing this year at Musikfest?
Where and when?
Saturday, August 12 at the Provident Bank Main Street Stage from 6:30-8 p.m.
How many years have you performed at Musikfest in the past?
With VoirVoir, since 2015, so two years, three fests. I actually played Musikfest for the first time as part of a performance art piece in 1995.
What does the opportunity to perform at Musikfest mean to you?
It feels great knowing that, at such a large city-wide festival, there’s a place for local artists like us who largely come from a DIY / punk background, and humbling that we’re asked back to play at the center of this city we live in love, close to where we, our friends, and family live.
What would you tell someone performing at Musikfest for the first time?
Drink water and be yourself!
