Saturday night marked the beginning of a partnership (outside of our usual First Friday fun) with the legendary Godfrey Daniels. To celebrate, we brought in two of the region’s most prolific and versatile jazz pop artists.
Philadelphia singer-songwriter Avi Wisnia finished a mini-tour with his final show of 2017 at the inaugural #GoUnderground at Godfrey’s showcase. Wisnia plans on taking the winter to record, but not before delivering a warm and engaging set of mostly piano tunes, with a brief switch featuring two songs on guitar. Set highlights included digital single “Sky Blue Sky,” a samba-influenced number recorded in Brazil, and the pointed, politically charged “I Am Not My Country,” a protest song rooted in the same folk tradition as Godfrey Daniels itself.
Cubbage took the stage with his trio next, making his Godfrey Daniels debut and showcasing his own multi-instrumental versatility between smooth, soulful originals like “The Gate” and a few covers, including a stirring rendition of Allen Stone’s “American Privilege.” Much like Avi Wisnia, Cubbage will be working on new material this winter, with a full band tour to come in 2018. If this year — and Saturday night’s performance — has been any indication, we can continue to expect big things from the Lansdale native.
