Philly Artists Marcelyn and A Day Without Love Coming to Allentown June 29
What are most Philadelphia DIY shows like? They are a place for making friends. That is the story of Marcelyn and A Day Without Love (ADWL). Both Penn State Alumni with differing musical backgrounds, the stories of both of these Philadelphia based songwriters will be shared across the New England area.
Marcelyn will be touring to release her debut full length album, “Indignities & Depravities” which is a 12 song album based on a millenial woman’s clarity with body image, mental illness, coming from a traditional music background, and queer identity. Her album will be released on June 1, 2018
Marcelyn sees “Indignities & Depravities” as her first true concept album, where she wishes that listeners are able to relate to the social stigmas of society of queer identity and women’s body image. In her interview with Bassment Podcast she wishes that people would stop stigmatizing fat people, people ought to be seen for more than their bodies. The narrative of Marcelyn is to accept people for who they are, nothing more and nothing else.
Brian Walker of A Day Without Love is no stranger to identity politics or equality. ADWL has recently released “Diary”, the sophomore album of ADWL, which brings up discussions on racism, mental illness, politics, friendship and love. Similar to the dialogue of Marcelyn, ADWL tells his story through direct statements and singalong hooks.
“Diary” has been given critical review from articles from Digital Wheat Paste, Polaris DIY, and Post Trash and has been commonly said to be reminiscent of Elliot Smith and early Bright Eyes. The acoustic storytelling of ADWL strays from the indie/punk vibes from his freshman album, “Solace”. However, the brutal honesty remains the same which gives the record a folk punk flair.
The songwriting pair will be seen playing on each other’s songs throughout the semi-national tour, which stops at Allentown’s Coffee House Without Limits alongside singer-songwriter Chelsea Smarr on Friday, June 29. The contrast of metaphor in Marcelyn’s writing with the direct storytelling of ADWL will serve as a diverse and enjoyable show. You can check out the two songwriters’ full list of dates below:
