Beyond the Valley: James Lee Baker Has the ‘Cowtown Blues’

Today, we head west to Colorado, where Americana artist James Lee Baker just released a new single, “Cowtown Blues.”

“Cowtown Blues”is a rootsy, upbeat tune, complete with prominent harmonica accents and Baker’s commanding vocal presence. The song follows our protagonist through a journey of young, untamed love in a two-story town; a love that transforms when the object of Baker’s affection finds religion and he follows — if for no other reason but to follow her.

A classically trained musician, James Lee Baker fuses influences from acoustic singer-songwriters like David Mead, Ellis Paul, John Gorka, Gregory Alan Isakov, Bob Dylan, and Slaid Cleaves. He embraces open tunings to create an unconventional but welcoming sound and timbre to his playing. Trained briefly by Richard Gilewitz, a renowned fingerstyle guitar player, James Lee’s fingerstyle guitar playing is rich and melodic, pulling listeners into memorable motifs and atmospheres.
